The green electricity produced by the turbines of the largest wind farm in Bulgaria provided carbon neutrality for the households of a town as big as Varna in the last month

More than half of the wind electricity in Bulgaria in January 2021 has been produced by St. Nikola Wind Farm near Kavarna. This became evident from the analysis of the production results of the wind farm for the first month of the year, and from the official data of the Sustainable Energy Development Agency.

The largest wind farm in the country – St. Nikola Wind Farm, operated by AES Bulgaria, produced in January 2021 43 763 MWh of green energy for the Bulgarian consumers. This is 53% of the entire volume of wind electricity produced in January in the country, which amounts to 82 683 MWh. As a result of their operation, the 52 wind turbines of the power plant have neutralized the footprint of the monthly consumption of all households of a town as big as Varna by ensuring a clean energy supply. Thanks to its operation in the last 10 years, St. Nikola Wind Farm has saved almost 2,6 million tons of carbon emissions for Bulgaria. The result achieved is equal to the CO2 absorption effect of almost 16 million trees for 10 years.

St. Nikola Wind Farm has 156 MW of installed capacity, which represents more than 22% of the total wind capacities installed in Bulgaria and in this way contributes for the country to meet the targets for the share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix. The wind farm is the backbone of the Integrated Early Warning System for Bird Protection, which complies with the European requirements for the preservation of wild birds. The system integrates on-site monitoring by ornithologists as well as modern radars which signal approaching flocks or single birds, which allows the stopping of individual turbines or the entire farm. In this way, St. Nikola Wind Farm takes care of the environment and contributes to the protection of biodiversity in the Kavarna region.
