The largest wind farm in Bulgaria provided enough green energy to cover the consumption of 94 000 Bulgarian households

In December 2021, St. Nikola Wind Farm generated 70% more energy than in November 2021

In December 2021, St. Nikola Wind Farm generated 70% more energy compared to November 2021. Only in the last month of 2021, the 52 wind turbines produced over 52 000 MWh which is the monthly generation record since the start of commercial operations in 2010 and the total generation for the last year reached 338 000 MWh of green energy. This amount is equal to the average annual consumption of 94 000 Bulgarian households – as many as there are households in the cities of Dobrich, Shumen, and Razgrad.

With its 156 MW of capacity, the wind farm represents around 22% of the total wind capacities installed in Bulgaria. In late 2021, St. Nikola Wind Farm secured a EUR 64 million credit facility, provided by the EBRD and two commercial banks. The package includes refinancing of the remaining exposure on a previous loan and a new commitment of EUR 16 million. The operation of St. Nikola facility is an important step towards Bulgaria’s goal to achieving a cleaner energy future and increasing Bulgaria’s capacity in the production of renewable energy.

St. Nikola Wind Farm is the backbone of the Integrated Early Warning System for Bird Protection, which complies with the European requirements for the preservation of wild birds. The integrated system minimizes the risk of birds colliding with the rotating parts of wind turbines by shutting down single, groups of turbines or entire wind farms, and implements a monitoring program during the risk periods for species of conservation importance.
