From the beginning of 2021 AES Bulgaria’s power plants generated energy covering 5,6MM Bulgarian households’ monthly consumption

July 7, 2021

AES Bulgaria’s power plants – TPP AES Galabovo and St. Nikola Wind Farm generated in the first 6 months of 2021 energy as much as the consumption of 5.6 million Bulgarian households for a month. The total amount of energy produced by the generating capacities of AES Bulgaria from the start of 2021 to the end of June amounts to 1 679 953 MWh which is 9% of the total energy consumed in the country.

The most modern coal-fired power plant in the country TPP AES Galabovo generated around 1 507 951 MWh of reliable energy from January to June 2021. This is about 18% more compared to the same period of 2020 when the energy generated was 1 283 200 MWh. The electricity produced by the power plant represents 8% of the electricity consumed by Bulgarian customers.

In June, TPP AES Galabovo celebrated 10 years of the start of its commercial operations. The power plant is of key importance for the Bulgarian energy system. TPP AES Galabovo not only guarantees the security of the energy supply in the country but also ensures the stability of the entire electricity transmission system by providing system services for the grid management by the National Dispatch Center of ESO.

St. Nikola Wind Farm, which is the largest in the country, generated 172 002 MWh of clean energy from nature in the first six months of the year. This is around one-quarter of the wind energy generated in the country for this period. The 156 MW wind farm represents 22% of the installed wind capacity in Bulgaria and helps Bulgaria meet its commitments to the EU for a share of RES in the total energy mix.
