AES’ TPP in Galabovo and St. Nikola Wind Farm have generated electricity covering the average consumption of 1,2 million Bulgarian households for the period January – March

AES Bulgaria’s power plants generated 20% more energy in the first quarter of 2022

April 6, 2022

From January to March this year, the power plants of AES Bulgaria have produced electricity equal to the average consumption of 1,2 million Bulgarian households for Q1 2022. For those three months, AES’ TPP in Galabovo and St. Nikola Wind Farm have jointly generated 1 174 500 MWh of electricity for Bulgarian consumers. This is a growth of more than 20% compared to the electricity produced by the two power plants for the same period last year.

AES’ TPP in Galabovo has generated 1 031 052 MWh of reliable electricity in Q1 2022. In March alone, the most modern coal-fired power plant in Bulgaria produced 368 160 MWh, which is 10% of the total electricity consumed in the country for the month. This means that every tenth kilowatt-hour used by the Bulgarian customers has been provided by Bulgarian energy resources and the capacities of AES´ TPP in Galabovo.

‘AES’ TPP in Galabovo has once again proved its critical role in the energy security of Bulgaria. It is once again obvious that the mines and the TPPs in the complex are the backbone of the Bulgarian energy sector. Because it is Bulgarian coal, a Bulgarian energy resource produced in the country. Electricity is also produced in Bulgaria, with no external dependence on what is happening geopolitically’, Ivan Tzankov, Managing Director of AES Bulgaria commented.

From January to March 2022, the 52 turbines of the largest wind farm in the country – St. Nikola Wind Farm, produced around 143 500 MWh of clean energy for Bulgarian consumers. In March only, the wind farm generated about 52 900 MWh, which is an increase of over 33% compared to the same month of 2021.
