For 11 years St. Nikola Wind Farm has generated 3,6 million MWh of clean energy for the Bulgarian customers. On March 15 the largest wind farm in Bulgaria celebrated its 11th anniversary since the start of its commercial operations. The wind farm located near Kavarna has a total installed capacity of 156 MW and represents over 20% of the wind capacity in the country which makes it the backbone of the renewable fleet of the country.

In this period, thanks to the operations of its 52 wind turbines, St. Nikola Wind Farm has saved Bulgaria more than 3 million tons of carbon emissions. The result achieved is equal to the CO2 absorption effect of more than 2,5 million trees for 70 years.

‘At AES we are improving lives by delivering greener, smarter energy solutions the world needs. Every day our team is working to accomplish our mission to accelerate the future of energy. AES’ Saint Nikola has an important role in converting our mission into a real action’, Olivier Marquette, AES Bulgaria President commented.

The wind farm is also the backbone of the Integrated Early Warning System for Bird Protection, which complies with the European requirements for the preservation of wild birds. The system integrates on-site monitoring by ornithologists as well as modern radars which signal approaching flocks or single birds, which allows the stopping of individual turbines or the entire farm. In this way, St. Nikola Wind Farm takes care of the environment and contributes to the protection of biodiversity in the Kavarna region.
